Power Play History

Although you may have heard the name Power Play or seen us performing somewhere, most of you don't know of the rich heritage of the band.

Power Pay started as a band assembled to play just one show.  Back in 1986, Danny Daniels was a popular disc jockey at WNGC radio in Athens, GA.  He had always done some singing and occasionally would sit-in with local bands.  Sometime that year he wandered into the local VFW and found a band playing country music in an entertaining style.  He asked to and was allowed to sit in with them.

Danny's visits to this band continued and the sit-ins really got him thinking that he would like to schedule a performance at the J & J Center.  For 30 years, until December 1993, the J & J Center was THE place to play if you were an up and coming country artist.  The club also showcased many of the headlining acts throughout it's star-studded history.

First Daniels needed a band.  He remembered the guitarist in the VFW group and contacted the player, Larry Williams, to see if he would be interested in putting something together to back him for a show at the J & J Center.  Larry liked the idea and they started combing the Athens, GA, area for other musicians.

After assembling some of the best musicians in the talent-rich area, including one of Marty Robbins' former bandmembers, they rehearsed and scheduled a show-date at the J & J Center for December 5, 1986.  The performance was a great success and the local reviews were very favorable.  It was obvious to all that this could not be just a "one night stand", thus Power Play was born.

Over the next few years, a couple of band members were replaced.  Power Play performed throughout the North Georgia area.  For a period of time, the group would play an "all country" gig one week and then the next week they would play an "all rock" gig.  All members of the band had grown up playing country, rock, gospel, bluegrass, beach and R & B!    Williams had even done a short stint in the employ of Soul Brother Number One: James Brown!

By 1987, they secured the job as the "house band" at the J & J Center.

In 1989, the group decided to make a record and see what would happen.  Their single, "You'll Never Hear The End Of It", penned by Nashville hit-maker Bruce Burch, was a regional hit for the band.  It even hit the number one position in a few markets.

Because of their success, Power Play has enjoyed opening shows for a Who's Who of artists from Conway Twitty to Alan Jackson.  They have also performed as the backing band for many Nashville artists.

What started out to be a band assembled for one show has become a life-long journey.  They still enjoy making music and entertaining a crowd.  However, they say they may stop on the 40th anniversary of the band  --- 2026?!?!?
